How to Make a Diversion Safe Can

Hiding valuables in plain sight is one of the best ways to keep them secure. A diversion safe is a hidden storage container that looks like an ordinary household item. Here’s how to make one that looks like a can.

    Materials You Will Need

    • An empty soda or food can with an intact top or lid

    • A can opener

    • Sandpaper or a file

    • A small plastic or glass container

    • Strong adhesive or epoxy glue

    • A knife or scissors

    • Clear tape

    • Optional: weight filler (such as rice or sand)

Step 1: Choose the Right Can

Pick a can that blends naturally with your kitchen or storage area.  A soda can, canned food, or aerosol container works well. Avoid unusual or rarely used cans, as they might attract attention. Make sure the top is still intact.

Step 2: Open the Can Carefully

Use a safety can opener to remove the bottom of the can. Avoid damaging the can itself. Set the removed bottom aside.

    Step 3: Smooth the Edges

After opening the can, the edges may be sharp. Use sandpaper or a metal file to smooth them out. Be careful not to cut your fingers.

Step 4: Clean and Dry the Can

Rinse out any leftover food or liquid completely. Let the can dry fully.

Step 5: Insert a Small Container

Find a small plastic container that fits snugly inside the can. This will hold your valuables.

    Step 6: Add Weight

A lightweight can might feel suspicious if someone picks it up. Add small stones, sand, or dried beans around the plastic container.

Step 7: Seal the Bottom Back On

Apply strong glue around the edge of the removed bottom and carefully press it back into place. Make sure it sits evenly. Hold it in place until the glue dries completely.

    Step 8: Store It Naturally

Once dry, place the can on a shelf with other canned items, in the fridge, or wherever it makes sense. The key is to keep it in an area where no one would question why it’s there.

    Extra Tips

    • If using a soda can, cut around the top and use a screw-on lid from another bottle for easier access.

    • Avoid choosing a brand or type of can that people in your household use frequently.

    • Do not use the safe if it is the only can left in a pantry. It may seem suspicious.

    • Keep it slightly dirty. A perfectly clean can among dusty items may look out of place.
